Why I Love RMHC

Three people tell why they volunteer

There is nothing more important than making a difference in the lives of others, and that is what our volunteers do every day.
— Mindy Wise, program manager of Ronald McDonald Care Mobile

Don Innes is dedicated to helping children like Tara, 8, receive the medical and dental care they need.

In the past year, 30,000 volunteers showed their commitment by donating a combined one million hours of their time to RMHC. Three volunteers share why RMHC is the Charity for them.

Volunteer: Don Innes, a retired insurance executive from Springfield, Mo.
What he does: Don volunteers for the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile program in Springfield, in honor of his wife, Betty, who volunteered with the program when it first opened. He began volunteering when Betty passed away. Don walks children from their classrooms to the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. While the kids are receiving dental exams, Don puts together goodie bags for them with a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and other dental supplies. “Don lets the children know that they are cared for and they are special,” says Mindy Wise, program manager of Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. “There is nothing more important than making a difference in the lives of others, and that is what our volunteers do every day.”
Why he loves RMHC: Don says he is passionate about the mission, and he knows that without the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile program, these children might not receive the help they need to lead healthy lives.
His philosophy: Don believes that once a potential volunteer becomes familiar with the work RMHC does to meet the specific needs of the community or meets just one child touched by RMHC programs, he or she will become a volunteer for life.

Volunteer: Ana Mayo, a retired English teacher from Puerto Rico
What she does: Ana helps the Puerto Rico Chapter in a number of ways, from answering the phone to translating materials for guests at the Ronald McDonald House. She especially likes working with children.
Why she loves RMHC: “The Ronald McDonald House gives me the satisfaction of knowing that I am using my abilities God gave me to make life easier for ill children and their parents. Sometimes a parent just needs someone to listen to them express their fears, or children need someone to play with them to take their mind away from sickness. I’m glad to be that someone.”
Her advice: Anyone considering volunteering for RMHC should visit a Ronald McDonald House. It only takes one time, Ana says. “Once you visit the House, you’ll be hooked.”

Volunteer: Li Xiaotao, a retired teacher from Taiwan
What she does: Li volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House in Taipei. She meets with guests and helps organize House activities. Li recruits many volunteers to the House by inviting other retired teachers and church friends to see how they can make a difference.
Why she loves RMHC: “Helping others is a deep source of personal happiness. I believe that love spreads as long as one person is willing to make a start.”
